Charmed Magazine (US) - March 01, 2006
Whether she’s discussing boyfriends, country music, or her hopes for the future, you can always rely on the delightful Rose McGowan, a.k.a. the youngest Halliwell sister, Paige, to speak her mind, which is why interviews with her are so entertaining. Here the gorgeous Charmed actress tells it like it is.
It says a lot about Charmed both as a show and as a working environment that Rose McGowan is now in her fifth year playing the youngest Halliwell sister, Paige. That’s because the talented actress, who has appeared in such high profile movies as Scream and the independent classic The Doom Generation, doesn’t normally like to be tied down for too long, preferring to keep her options open as to what her future holds. With Charmed however, Rose committed to a five year contract and to her own surprise found herself thoroughly enjoying playing the feisty, unpredictable Paige. In an exclusive interview with Charmed Magazine, Rose reveals how she made the right decision taking the role as well as talking about her plans for the future and her surprise love of country music
We remember speaking to you five years ago, when you first signed on for Charmed. You were coming from the indie film world and you didn’t know what to expect. Now, as you’re nearing the end of your time on Charmed, how do you look back on it all? How happy are you with your decision to do the show?
I think, ultimately, it was completely the right decision. I had no idea it was going to go on this long. I signed on for five seasons. I knew that’s what the contract said but I had no idea the show would keep going. Most shows don’t run this long. Hardly any shows run this long, But here we are. So that shocked me. But at the end of the day, I think, the benefits of it outweigh the negatives. When I started Charmed I looked really young to the point where if they put me up against an older leading man I looked kind of creepy with them. Now, I look a little more mature and, in terms of what I want to do next, more films, it’s been great that I’ve been doing Charmed. Charmed gives me some recognition in foreign markets and that can mean my being in something might help raise foreign financing. And it’s good for me in the State, but it’s huge all over the world, especially places like Australia and England. So that’s the business. I’ve noticed that Charmed flies pretty low in the eyes of directors. I think that’s because directors just aren’t aware of Charmed, whereas producers and the money people are. On the personal side, I love this group of people. And, as an actor, it’s actually forced me to develop some discipline, which I didn’t have a whole lot of before, and study habits, which I certainly didn’t have. So it’s definitely been worth it.
What’s your dream role?
I actually prefer drama. Playing Paige is fun but it’s more like comedy, which I can do with my eyes shut. It’s like anybody who does drama all the time would want to do comedy. It’s just like eating the same meal all the time.
You gave a fantastic rendition of the jazz hit ‘Fever’ on Charmed. Any chance you’ll follow in the footsteps of Minnie Driver and Juliette Lewis and release an album?
I would, and I have a song that I did with a musician called BT who’s really huge and I sold it to three different movies. I was thinking about it and I might go towards songs like ‘Fever’ [which she performed in the episode ‘Sense and Sense Ability’] and things like that because I really love country music I could definitely do a country album. I torture people I know playing country albums in my car. It’s like, “well, I’m driving, if you don’t like it you can get the hell out!”
Aside from Charmed what television shows do you enjoy watching?
I love Extreme Makeover which airs on the Health Channel over here. The funniest thing is, I ran into one of the doctors on the show recently and I freaked out and started shaking with excitement. I was like “You do the best work on the show…I love you” [laughs]
Do you have any ambitions to direct an episode of Charmed?
No, not at all. People have to ask you a lot of questions and you have to remember things. That’s not my forte. I’d love to produce. I’m more controlling in that way.
How are you coping with all the on-set babies? Is it a bit like a crèche at times?
There’s four no. I love the little girl babies who play Chris. They’re girls but they play boys. They have the best personalities and I’m thinking of stealing one, even thought I’m sometimes not so on babies.
And, of course, there’s Holly’s son Finley…
Holly’s little boy is so cute. Every time she gives to me to look after I give him a Mohawk, because she such a normal, boring hairdo. [laughs] All it takes is a little bit of wax. Holly is the sweetest person. We always tease her because she always seems to be yelling “Leo!” I want to make a loop of her yelling that. She has to though, because it’s the only way to call her husband.
Are you surprised how diverse Charmed’s fan base is?
I got one of my girlfriends a guest spot in one of the first episodes I ever did and the other nigt she got surrounded by these lawyers who kept repeating her lines at her. This big group of cute guys. They were all like. “Oh, you just have to talk to my girlfriend.” To remember something from four years ago. I can’t remember what I did last week. It’s crazy. I thought it was just going to be 12-year-olds. But there are people of all ages who love the show; which is great, because obviously we wouldn’t still be on the air if it wasn’t for them.
What, in your opinion, is the reason behind Charmed’s success?
I have no idea but I’m awfully happy for it. I’ll get 65-year-old cabbies in New York saying, “We love the show, what’s happening with Paige?” I just look up and they give me free rides. I go to New York a lot and people are always asking me about it. They’re very funny, especially with their thick New York accents. They’re like [puts on NY accent] “Hey, Paige!” and I always get startled. It’s really weird now because if someone calls me Paige, I always look around and it could just be because that’s their name. It’s pathetic!
You know from experience that Charmed fans are pretty obsessive about the show. Are you obsessive about anything?
I do understand being obsessive about something you love. It’s different for me because I’m on the show. So I’m not going to be obsessive about it. But I’m obsessive about Boston Terriers. You have no idea. They are the best things ever. They have the best personalities. They’re weird. They’re funny-looking. They entertain me and they’re very soulful and they’re smart as whips. I go on web sites at night to look at Boston terrier puppy web sites. People have live web cams on their Boston terrier puppies, and that’s what I watch. I have Boston terrier salt and pepper shakers and I have a Boston terrier decal on my car.
One last question…Looking back over your five years on the show, which episode of Charmed would you say has been your favourite
’Charmed Noir’ is going to go down as my favourite episode. I think it all came together on that one. The writing was great. We had a great director, Michael Grossman, who’s done a lot of movies and he pulled favours to do that episode. He got all these mob-looking guys to come down to set and do a day’s work. He got all these cool cars . Everything gelled in that one. It’s definitely my favourite.
