He's a famous television and movie actor, musician, philanthropist and dad. He’s also the great-grandson of Jean Paul Getty, who founded the Getty Oil Company, and was at one time, one of the richest men in the world. Balthazar Getty has the world at his fingertips but is a regular down-to-earth guy just doing his thing.
Balthazar spoke to MySpace and opened up a little about his personal life, what he’s working on and even shared his current play list.
MYSPACE: Can you tell MySpace a little bit about what is going on with “Tommy†on ‘Brothers and Sisters?' Do you want to share what's coming up?
BALTHAZAR GETTY: Well the you-know-what hit the fan and he made some bad choices and he’s having to face the wreckage that he created. Without giving too much away, the season finale ends in a very kind of dramatic way where we don’t know what the fate of “Tommy†might be. He kind of burned all his bridges work-wise and nobody is really left. He’s got legal problems, his wife and child left him and half his family have turned their backs on him and he’s kind of faced with a big decision to go back home and face the music or do some soul searching so in the finale-- you're left asking quite a few questions.
MYSPACE: One of the producers of 'Brothers & Sisters' said something about your character “Tommy†doing some soul searching after finding himself in chaos.
How does that relate to your personal life?
BALTHAZAR: It’s pretty funny how, you know, when you’re on a show the writers get to know you and they might write things that you are kinda going through in your real life and [they sometimes] borrow some of the drama and draw on it. It’s kind of ironic but yeah he [Tommy] ends up doing some spiritual work basically now that he finds himself in these circumstances. And I actually grew up in a very spiritual household. My mother was always searching for deeper meaning, and so growing up--for me-- had always attached a stigma to spirituality and studied spirituality and kinda looked for a deeper meaning. For me, it was always a big mountain I had to climb and I knew that I’d have to climb it at one point but I kept pushing it off as long as I could [pause] until I realized that in order for me personally to be happy and to be the best version of me, I had some work I had to do. In fact, on Wednesday [March 18th] I'm doing this radio show on XM and Sirius satellite with Yehuda Berg who is a spiritual teacher and has become a good friend of mine and I feel honored that he would even ask me to be a part of it. He is this real special and amazing guy and he helped me out a lot. Ashton Kutcher just did it a few weeks ago and Anthony Keidis was on last week. I think Donna Karen and Lucy Liu are coming up. It's at 3PT/ 6ET on Channel 102 on Sirius. We'll open it up to callers to ask questions so it should be great. We’ll talk about life, relationships, career and all kinds of good stuff.
MYSPACE: Seems sort of appropriate that your next project is to guest star on 'Medium.
'
BALTHAZAR: Yeah I’m actually just on my way down to Manhattan Beach right now. Patricia Arquette and I have been really good friends for years. We did a movie together and she’s actually the godmother of one of my kids. She’s directing an episode. And I used to work with Anjelica Huston too. I'm going to see Rumer Willis in a little bit. She’s also going to be in the episode.
MYSPACE: Small world isn't? What's your character like?
BALTHAZAR: Yeah! I get to play this real nasty guy. He's this very kind of slick real estate guy who is a pretty nasty guy and does some pretty nasty things. It’s fun when you are on a TV show for a couple years and essentially you are playing the same character, although there might be variations of your character. I'm having a lot of fun with it.
MYSPACE: Looking forward to it! When can we see it?
BALTHAZAR: I’m guessing the episode will air in the next 6 weeks or something—not sure yet—but I'll make sure The Channel knows all the details soon. Maybe we can get you a clip or something cool to show.
MYSPACE: Sounds good! What else are you working on?
BALTHAZAR: Well a lot of MySpacers know about all the music I make. We did a double record which is really exciting and it took us almost three years to record it. And so we are just mastering that right now and that will be on MySpace within the next month or so hopefully. And then I did a solo record as well called "Solar Drive." That I’m hoping to get up there in the next few weeks. Other than that I kinda spend time here and there helping out this charity called Art Of Elysium that I have been a part of for about ten years and we do an annual gala fundraiser. Basically it's this organization that helps bring art, music, all sorts of different forms of creative projects into children’s hospital and we create workshops for these kids to do all kinds of fun things while they are in the hospital. Musicians will come in and we’ll set up drums and guitars and let these kids rock out or we’ll bring artists in and canvases and they can come in and paint with the kids. Or last year for the gala we had Ford donate a couple of white trucks and the kids got to come out and paint on the trucks and we auctioned off the trucks. It's a way to connect kids to art and music and creativity who are facing a difficult time.
MYSPACE: Is this in Los Angeles?
BALTHAZAR: Yes were based in L.A. yeah… Art Of Elysium has branched out across the country. It's really great. I’ve been involved with different charities throughout the years, and this is the first really hands-on one which I saw exactly how my contribution is affecting people. It wasn’t that I was just sending money off to a place for a good cause and I was hoping that the money was going to connect to these people. This is actually me volunteering my time and going in and actually physically and emotionally participating and doing these workshops with these kids so you know, I really saw the effects and the importance of it.
MYSPACE: We hope more people can help out. Sounds great. MySpacers are always curious to what celebrities are listening to. Can you name the top 5 artists you have playing in your car right now? Go for it.
BALTHAZAR: Yeah…let’s see I can go through a list for ya. I just made a mixed CD before I left work so let’s see... Talking Heads, The Stooges, "I Wanna Be Your Dog," Mobb Deep, Lil Wayne "You Ain't Got Nothing," and Laurie Anderson, "Big Science." There you have it.
MYSPACE: Nice! Very eclectic.
BALTHAZAR: Yeah, you know, music is such a big part of my life-- it's the way I connect to my work. It’s the way that I connect to a lot of things.
