Christine: How has becoming a mother changed your perspective on life? On acting?
Holly: It changed my life dramatically, and for the better. I honestly panicked when I first found out I was pregnant with Finley, as it wasn't planned. I thought I was going to be a horrid mother, all through my pregnancy all I did was moan about how much of a failure I was going to be! But it changed when I gave birth. As soon as I held him, my maternal instincts suddenly kicked in. I had been reading all those pregnancy books during my pregnancy filling my head with rubbish, all I did was moan to David " I'm not like those people, I don't feel this, I'm not a good mom etc"! I was terrible. But it's an incredible feeling when they just look at you with so much love, and all you want to do is love and protect them from anything! And when I'm acting, it helps its actually developed it because when play a mommy it brings it out when I think about how I act with the boys at home and that. Its helped both my personal life and my career.
Christine: You mentioned going through a lot in the past 5 months, regarding the birth of your 3rd son, and having the birth a c-section. What pulls you through all the stress of being a mother, being in the spotlight through it all?
Holly: Basically, my family and my fans. I have to be strong for the sake of my family and my fans. I've always been told I'm a strong person, and I have helped so many people through difficult times in their life's because of how strong I am. I feel as if I let them down if I ever act weak, and the same with my boys. I want to teach them how to survive the world, as its not exactly the best place to raise kids these days. God only knows how their going to turn out no matter what values and morals you teach them! But I try to stay out the spot-light as much as possible, I'm not like other people who crave it. I feel as if I'm protecting my boys when I keep them out the sight of the world basically (laughs). Over protective I guess, huh?
Christina: A mother myself, I can relate to your answer a lot. I was also terrified of being a mother. What you say about the maternal instinct is a really nice message for other mothers & mothers to be out there. I think it is amazing how you do stay out of the spot light, and the drama, it is one of the things I have always respected about you as a professional actress.
Holly: Thank you! I'm glad people see it in that light, rather than being stuck up and basically ignoring people and my fans. Because it's not like that at all, my true fans know that but its the others that don't.
Christine: It's true, people who see you for the caring person that you are, are your true fans...and at that point, they kind of overlap into friends. Who offer support to you, and truly care about you as a person. We are all in this together after all (this being a person thing lol)
Christine: I noticed that you dedicate yourself to a few causes, such as women’s health, what has inspired you to be of service in this way?
Holly: Yeah I have supported a few things like that. I've had a few scares about my health in the past 6 years, and some of my family has also. It's something that I think is very important, especially to women. I mean, there's that many things going around these days that can kill, and they are simple enough to treat if they just get caught in time. And its something I want to promote. It's a tradedgy that every day hundreds of life's get stolen from diseases and cancers, and I want to do everything I can to stop that. Breast cancer is something I'm very aware of, and want to promote awareness for it. A close relative and friend actually got beaten by this cancer, and its all because they didn't think it would happen to them. And it hurt a lot, because I knew that it could be treated, and watching someone like that, someone you love and care about deteriorate in front of you is heartbreaking.
Christine: I remember reading that they wanted you to wear a padded bra at first, and you wouldn't. I told that story to my son, and said how impressed I was that you didn't give in to the pressure of superficial appearance. He learned something really powerful that day.
Holly:
Yeah, apparently I didn't stand up to Alyssa and Shannens standards in appearance. And I did wear it a few times, but I finally told them take me for who I am NATURALLY, or don't take me at all. I mean, I am a role model for lots of young girls out there. And I want them to know, that appearance isn't everything. If you have looks, it wont get you everywhere in life. Personality is the only thing that counts, and people forget that. Appearance is nothing in today's world, although some people try to make it to be everything. Your looks fade as the years go by, but a personality is a trade you will always have. So develop a good one!
Christine: You seem to have a soft spot in your heart for animals, do you have any intention of adopting, or rescuing more animals for pets?
Holly: You noticed, huh? (laughs) I really want to, but I can't at the moment. Because I just had a son, I don't want to bring any animals into the house until we know its safe. He was born early as you know, and he's not out the danger zone completely. But he's doing really good, and I don't want to do anything to jeopardise that. But as soon as he'ss older, and we know he has no allergies etc towards animals, then yes we will definetely be getting more pets!
Christine: After getting to know you a bit personally Holly, I am just so awed by your spirit, and humility. My best friend has two young girls, that watch your show, and love it. I am excited to share this interview with them. Is there any advice you would want to give to young girls, about appearance, and peer pressure?
Holly: Just that appearance isn't everything. Although every girl wants to be pretty, and unfortunately the world has all the wrong role models approaching children in this way. But your personality is the main thing, and it will take you far in life. Don't try and make yourself someone your not, be comfortable with who you are. Love and respect yourself, and other people will do the same.
Christine: I am wondering about your spiritual life. Do you have a spiritual faith at all? You seem to have such a bright spirit or charisma, which shines through all your characters.
Holly: Um, caught me of guard with that one (laughs). What exactly do you mean though?
Christine: well, I am wondering if you for example...go to church, pray, meditate etc. Some of the stars out there are pretty open about having a spiritual path, and others are not
Holly: I do go to church, yes. I actually never until I had the kids, them my mom kept saying "Kids are a gift from god, if you receive that special gift cherish it." It made me really think, and it opened my senses. Some women can't have these gifts, and I did. Someone obviously wanted me to, or at least that's what I believe. So I started going to church, and learning the kids about god and what he does and if you always believe in him and respect him, he'll look out for you. I don't mediate etc though, to be honest I don't have the time!
Christine: ha ha...that leads me to my next question!
How is it having 3 boys now? How are you finding time to stay balanced in your family life, and professional life?
Holly: Who says I'm balancing (laughs)? Well, I'm not alone which is a good thing, otherwise I'd not have a clue what to do! David helps a lot, he's like Mr. Mom. I've realised that I have to spend time with my kids, there the most important thing to me. It really hut me and hurt me one day when Finley said something to me. I said something about we were going to go on a trip together, because he had asked us about it and we said we would take him. And I got called into work, after promising him. I told him Mommy couldn't make it, we'd have to go another time. And he said, it's okay mommy, I didn't think you would. I burst out in tears! From then on I realised I had to make time for my kids no matter what. I got brought up not getting a lot of quality time with my mom or father, and because of that it sort of made me see that I have to do it differently for my kids.
Christine: Aww wow, that is a powerful message. You are an amazing women, and mother .
Do you have any advice for other mothers out there who are raising children in the world today, as well as trying to find a way to be successful in their careers, and how they are as women?
Holly: I realise how hard it is, balancing a career as well as motherhood. And those women that do it alone, they really inspire me. The courage they show is amazing. Motherhood comes with its good days and its bad days. But all you can do is take it one day at a time, some will be harder than others. It may seem like a journey that will never end, but when your kids tell you they love you or look at you with all that love in their eyes, it makes it all worth while. I have been blessed with my kids, my family, and my career. Unfortunately, some haven't. But they always make the best of what they have, and that's what's important. Just remember and be strong, follow your heart and it will pay you back.
Christine: thank you Holly, that really touches me, as a single mother myself.
My son asked me to ask this one..Which episode of charmed did you enjoy filming the most?
Holly: Well that's tough. I enjoyed filming them all! The last one was great, it was really emotional, it took us ages to do that we couldn't get through a scene without crying! But all the episodes were great, the costumes, the scripts, everything! But I really enjoy the emotional scenes, it challenges you as an actress/actor. My favourite episode has to be Awakened. I'm not sure why, it just really touched me.
Christine: I'll have to google that one....what was it about?
Holly: It's the one where Prue was still around. Where Piper had taken Ill and was in the hospital, they didn't think she was going to make it?
Christine: The last one made me cry like a baby ! It was very bitter sweet, after following you for all 8 years.
I am also roughly the same age as you all, so I felt I kind of grew up with the show.
Oh..yes that was very powerful, Leo clipped his wings for Piper...that's love. ( about awakened )
I work in the field of wellness, and as you, have a passion for helping women to be empowered to be all they can be. Do you have any words of wisdom from your own experience of dealing with pressure of a very demanding career? As well, as dealing with people who can be a challenge at times?
Holly: I'm probably not the best role model on that one, I'm known to lose my temper (laughs). Finley picks up a lot of new words when Mommy's angry (laughs)! But you just have to remember that it will all pay of one day. And as I said before, times get tough, but overcome them and you'll see the rewards. Life's full of little challenges, it tests you. But you overcome them, and you become stronger and ready to fight the next challenge. Life would be boring, if it was the same thing over and over!
Christine: beautiful...and yes, so true
How do you feel about the love between Leo and Piper? Do you feel it is a realistic model of a healthy relationship?
Holly: It is a healthy relationship I think, yeah. It;s not perfect, but that's what makes it healthy. We didn't want to project this perfect little relationship, where there's no arguments, no disagreements. Because, where In life do you actually see that? It's superficial. Everyone argues, everyone disagrees. But they loved each other, and I think it shows that love overcomes everything. It may not seem it at the time, and you may wondering if its really worth it. But it is, it makes you stronger as a person and as a couple.
Christine: Yes, and it showed my son that in love, all things are possible
I think your show was a great teacher for my son, the bond between the sisters was such an important message about family sticking together. Did you draw at all from your own feelings of connection with your real family?
Holly: I actually made up for what I never experienced from my family. We were never close unfortunately. And I think family's should be, the disagreements come along with the love. And they get overpowered by the love. That's what family's are for. I think the lack of involvement in my family when I was younger, made me want to be even closer to my own little family now. I think teaching kids, and even adults that family is important is a very strong message. One that everyone should follow. Without family, there's nothing.
Christine: Yes, so true.
The other day my son said to me “I am so glad that I watch charmed because now that I know everything happens for a reason, I am not afraid to die†I was so impressed how he took such a beautiful piece of wisdom from the show. Did you learn any life lessons from the writings on the show?
Holly: That's really good! I'm glad that we had the chance to inspire people, kids and adults that there's a lot of things to life, and never be afraid! Everything does happen for a reason, its a motto I live by. I learned a lot of things from the show, I think we all did. Its just such a relisitc day to day motion of what happens in real life. Obviosuly except the witchy business (laughs). I think the most important message is that anything possible. Believe in yourself, believe in your dreams.
Christine: (laughs)
it's nice for kids to dream though
I have heard that you produced a few of the episodes yourself, how was that for you? Where did you get your inspiration from?
Holly: We didn't actually write them. We had thousands of ideas, but they all got tossed aside. Not much went right from us in that industry though. We had great bosses, in some prescriptive. But, it wasn't the dream (laughs). God knows where I'm getting the courage to say that (laughs). I'll wait for my lawsuit !
Christine: there were lots of miracles on the show, aside from all the supernatural stuff...have there been any amazing things that have happened in your personal life that have touched you, and made an impact on who you are today?
Holly: I think the most important one, was becoming a mother. It changed me dramatically. It matured me and actually made me complete. Wow, who thought I was this cheesy (laughs). I've had many things happen to me that are inspirational, even so much as a really emotional fan letter. They all shaped me into who I am today.
Christine: best miracle ever is the birth of a child...yes yes
Holly: The most painful too (laughs)!
Christine: I really honour the common sense smarts you have about you. Do you think having such a ‘good head one your shoulders†has helped you in becoming so successful? Or does luck have a lot to do with it?
Holly: I think its personality and luck. As I said, anything possible. I never ever thought I would get this far, and I look back on my life everyday and wonder how I got where I am. But as I said, its down to both. My success isn't to do with my appearance, and I hope people see that. And I hope its inspiring to young people out there. I don't know what got me where I am today, I know its my fans I thank the most though!
Christine: You are amazing ... I agree, I thin kit is both. Your personality really shines through, and is mostly what people can relate to
Is really beautiful how much you are inspired by your fans…it is amazing how you have relationships with these strangers, yet they know you almost intimately because of watching you so closely. Does that ever feel invasive?
Holly: Thank you! My fans aren't strangers to me though, their my friends. I may not know them all personally, but they all mean so much to me. Every single one! They got me where I am today, their support and love made me who I am. There's nothing I can do that would ever repay them for what they gave me.
Christine: Wow, that is really a sweet thing to say Holly, I am honoured to have gotten to know you today.
You are truly a beautiful person inside and out.. People helping each other out is a huge inspiration for me.
where do you see yourself and the world in 10 years?
Holly: I don't want to even think the state the world is going to be in in 10 years. It scares me!
Christine: I am kind of a dreamer....I am hoping we will get forced into living in a way that you just described
where people care about stranger, and help each other out
Holly: Yeah, lets hope huh.
Christine: we can always hope anyway but yes...there are scary possibilities out there!
Are you still friends with Shannon?
Holly: I was waiting fr that one (laughs). Yeah, we still speak and do lunch every month. She's quite busy, so we don't get to see each other as much as we'd like to.
Christine: (laughs)
and Alyssa?
Holly: Yeah, I keep in contact with Alyssa too! She's great, such a good laugh! I saw her not that long ago, I had to prize her away from Kelley with a photo of my new horse! She was planning on stealing him I think (laughs).
Christine: were you close with the actor who played Leo? After working so closely with him, did you get to know him well?
Holly: Brian? Yeah we were really close. He's an amazing actor, and an amazing friend. He helped us all through so much. We did distract him at items, and annoy him and wind him up at any opportunity possible! But he loves us all really (laughs).
Christine: ( about Kelley ) awwww lol
I bet he is sooooo cute
how is his health now?
Holly: Don't mean to brag, but he's beautiful! His healths good, much better than we expected. Because he was early, and had complications etc, we were not sure how it was gonna happen. But he's a little fighter!
Christine: oh good!
I am so happy to hear that!
Well I should let you get back to your lovely family, and I should tear my son away form Charmed
I am totally blown away by your simple wisdom, and humility…it has truly been an honour getting to know you!
Holly: Sure hon! Thank you! It's been great speaking with you, your a great person. Take care hon, best wishes to you and your family.
Christine: How has becoming a mother changed your perspective on life? On acting?
