"My Wish" written by Jeffrey Steele & Steve Robson and recorded by Rascal Flatts on the Lyric Street Records CD, Me & My Gang
"I started thinking about all the things I wanted her to know and remember and try to look out for...things to try not to forget...as she goes through life and this is what came out." Jeffrey Steele
My Wish came to me in a funny chain of events. The morning before I wrote the song I was sitting with my youngest daughter, Justine, and she was complaining that I had never written a song for her. I'd written songs for all of my other kids -- Jessie, Casey and Alex -- but nothing for her. So I told her, Okay, when I go in to write today, I'm gonna write a song for you. She was like, "Yeah right...sure whatever."
On that day on the way up to Music Row, I was thinking about what she said and about the crazy world we live in...the world she lives in today...how were all trying to find some joy and happiness and some peace of mind, chase a few dreams, meet somebody wonderful, the whole bit. I was just kind of thinking about that in the midst of all the things that are going on in the world these days.
That morning I was getting together with Steve Robson, who's a great friend of mine. We've had previous success writing songs like "What Hurts The Most" and "These Days" with Rascal Flatts and quite a few others. He's one of my favorite guys to write with. He's a great composer, and I love hearing his music. Every time I hear it, it just inspires melodies and words. That morning when I heard the track he had made, I was just completely floored by it and inspired.
On the way into town, I had started writing about how I hope Justine finds things in her life that make her happy and bring her joy. When I got to the chorus, I started saying, "My wish for you is that this life becomes all that you want it to" and it just kind of rolled from there. I started thinking about all the things I wanted her to know and remember and try to look out for...things to try not to forget...as she went through life and this is what came out.
So I sing this for Justine...
