The film Man On The Run starring British acting legend, Sir Ben Kingsley, chronicles the life of IRA informer Martin McGartland, between 1987 and 1991.
Filming took place in Ardglass on Monday and Tuesday, and will take place today in Killough. The local villages are being used to shoot scenes of IRA gun running in Scotland. Canadian director, Kari Skogland, visited Ireland earlier this year to seek out locations. She has chosen Ardglass and Killough as they resemble Scotland, and for their “beauty, peace and tranquility,” images Skogland is eager to portray in the film.
Skogland, who has also written the film, is best known in the UK for directing several episodes of the hit Channel 4 comedy Queer As Folk, in 2000.
The film also stars Hollywood actress, Rose McGowan. McGowan, whose father is Irish, is best known for her leading roles in the American television series, Charmed, teen horror flick, Scream, and the Quentin Tarantino movie, Grindhouse.
The film is based on the 1998 book, Fifty Dead Men Walking, written by McGartland after his own part in the story came to a near fatal conclusion. The story tells how McGartland was recruited by the RUC Special Branch to infiltrate the IRA.
